I have forever had fiber in my fingers. Starting with learning to embroider using picture punch cards and shoestring, I have done needle work, knitting, crochet (badly), macramé, paper making, fiber dying, and weaving. In the last 5 years, I found myself resisting using a “pattern” in projects, coming up with messes but sometimes a gem would emerge. Finding these rare successes encouraged me to think in non-traditional ways, not only about my work and my art, but myself. I see fibers and am intrigued how making marks with needle and thread can be both art and poetry, contemplative and dangerous (think needles piercing flesh), and a way to envelop revered objects, thoughts and words.
Enjoy,
Paula
